Goalkeeper caught eating a pie on camera handed two-month ban and £375 fine

Wayne Shaw was at the centre of a controversy earlier this year that later became known as ‘pie-gate.’

A GOALKEEPER WHO was captured on camera eating a pie during an FA Cup game, has been handed a two-month ban and a £375 fine.

Ex-Sutton United keeper Wayne Shaw allegedly ate the pie during his side’s FA Cup clash against Arsenal in February, after a bookmaker offered odds of 8-1 on him doing so.

The Gambling commission subsequently launched a probe into the incident.

45-year-old Shaw has been punished for intentionally influencing a football betting market and bringing the game into disrepute.

Shaw, who resigned from the club after the controversial incident, denied the charge when he appeared at an FA hearing in Wembley on Wednesday.

He said at the time of the scandal that he was unaware of the betting promotion prior to the fifth-round FA Cup tie, and said it was ‘just a bit of fun.’

Speaking to Sky Sports News at today’s hearing he said:

“I can’t believe it. It has affected my whole life. I just need to move on now. Hopefully today will be the end of it.”
